Sometimes we get so caught up in trying to make a beautiful painting that we forget to enjoy the process.
We question every brushstroke, second guess our colours and hesitate to cover up something we've already painted. It's amazing what we can discover when we stop worrying so much about getting everything right.
That's what Wild About Flowers is all about.
Making lots of art, trying new things and discovering that sometimes a painting just needs another layer.
A little story from my studio...
Years ago, I was drowning in canvases. They were taking over my home. Seriously.
The problem was that I loved painting so much I just couldn't stop!
In an effort to keep painting at the same pace (and leave a little space for my family!), I decided to try painting on paper.
I'd always loved working on canvas, so I wasn't quite sure what to expect. But once I started, it was magical!
Suddenly, I felt free to explore in ways I hadn't before. I experimented with colours, tried different tools, made a mess and painted over things I didn't love. Nothing felt quite so precious, and every painting didn't have to become a finished piece.
Along the way, I began discovering my favourite colours, marks and techniques. I was finding my own voice as an artist.
Before long, those loose, expressive florals caught the attention of art licensing companies, and my paintings started finding their way into shops and homes around the world.
I wanted to share that same feeling of freedom with you. The joy of experimenting, making plenty of art and discovering what happens when you stop worrying quite so much about getting everything right. That’s where the idea for this class came from.
Sometimes the best way to find your own style is to simply keep painting.
So, what will we paint?
A whole lot of flowers, of course!
We'll start with quick, colourful studies, revisit a few of our not-so-favourites, and build our way into larger, expressive paintings on paper.

01. Quick and Pretty
In two fun warm-up lessons, we'll create six quick floral studies at a time, playing with colour, experimenting with marks and trying different ways of making flowers.
The idea is to paint freely without getting too attached to the results. Some you'll love, some you won't, and that's perfectly okay!
And the best part? Even though these little paintings come together quickly, they look absolutely lovely framed! It's a wonderful reminder that creating beautiful art for your home doesn't have to be complicated or take hours and hours.
02. More Layers, More Flowers
Remember those little paintings we weren't quite so happy with? We're going back to them!
In four lessons, I'll show you how I revisit earlier paintings, adding new colours, different marks and lots more flowers.
We'll cover things up, change direction and discover how a few fresh layers can completely transform a painting.
It's a wonderful reminder that nothing is too precious to paint over.
03. Four Paintings, Four Ways
Now we'll put some of that experimenting into practice with four colourful floral paintings on 8×10 inch boards.
Each painting begins a little differently, giving us plenty of opportunities to explore colour, composition, layering and loose, expressive marks.
These projects are all under 45 minutes, making them perfect for those times when you want to sit down and create something lovely without committing an entire afternoon.
04. Going Bigger
Time to take everything we've been exploring and give it a little more space!
In these two projects, we'll create larger, expressive floral paintings on 18×24 inch mixed-media paper.
We'll work with colour, movement and layers, building our paintings from those first marks through to the finishing touches….and because we're working on paper, we can bring along that same sense of freedom we've been enjoying in our smaller studies!
And a little something extra...
Because even our leftovers have possibilities!
We're not throwing away those little experiments just yet!
In the bonus lesson, we’ll create one more piece using scraps from our discards to create a fun and beautiful floral collage.
Sometimes the things we almost threw away turn into something wonderful.

A few Questions you Might Have…

Absolutely! We'll start with small, playful studies and build from there. I'll walk you through each project step by step, so you can follow along even if you don't have much painting experience.
And if you've been painting for years but want to loosen up and try something different, there's plenty here for you too!

We'll be using acrylic paints, a variety of brushes, and a few painting surfaces, including mixed media paper and canvas boards.
I use Liquitex acrylics, but any brand will work! There's lots of flexibility with supplies, and I encourage you to use what you already have and make substitutions where needed. No need to buy a whole new collection of paints or brushes!

I love painting on canvas, but there's something wonderfully freeing about working on paper! It's less expensive, easy to store and perfect for experimenting without feeling like every painting has to be a masterpiece.
And don't underestimate those little paintings. They can look absolutely lovely framed!

All the lessons are pre-recorded and taught in real time, with me talking you through the whole painting process. No sped-up demonstrations or missing steps!
You can pause, rewind and paint along at whatever pace feels comfortable.

We'll begin with quick little studies, and the four 8×10 projects are each under 45 minutes. Our larger paintings will take a little longer, but there's no rush.
You can work through the class over a weekend, spread it out over several weeks or simply paint whenever you feel inspired.

Yes! Wild About Flowers takes a different approach from my other floral classes.
Rather than focusing mainly on individual finished paintings, we'll spend more time experimenting with quick studies, revisiting pieces we don't love and discovering the freedom of painting on paper.
It's all about making lots of art, trying new things and becoming more comfortable trusting your own creative instincts.
