When Summer Came feels like that first soft morning when summer finally arrives. Not the loud bright kind, but the quieter version. The kind where the air is still cool, the light is gentle and everything feels full of possibility.
I painted her in soft washes of cream and dusty teal with quiet pinks and blushes layered through. There are little hints of bloom tucked into the corners and soft pencil marks that wander across her surface like notes from another season. At the bottom, a few quiet drips fall like the last bit of rain before the sun comes through.
She is the kind of painting that doesn't try too hard. She just feels good to look at.

You know that feeling when the sun finally comes out after weeks of grey?
Here on Vancouver Island, it's like the whole island comes alive. The birds start singing, people step outside and actually smile at each other, and suddenly the world is full of colour again. I love the rain, I really do. But there is something truly magical about that first sign of sun.
That's exactly what I was feeling when I painted this.
The palette is light and playful, the kind of colours that don't shout but somehow make everything feel a little brighter and a little more hopeful. It's the painting equivalent of that collective exhale when the world finally warms up again.

My son used to pick me little bouquets of dandelions when he was small. He’d walk up to me proud as could be, the little flowers being crushed by his tight hold. I’d thank him excitedly and put them in a little jar of water on the shelf. He’d walk away with the biggest smile.
Sometimes I wish I could hop in a time machine and go back. Just for a visit..
I was thinking about those little bouquets when I painted this. Soft yellows and creamy whites and quiet greens that feel loose and easy and full of that same simple joy. It came together in a way that made me really happy and I hope it brings that same feeling into whoever's home it goes to.

Something Lovely started out bold. Bright pinks and oranges, loud greens, big confident strokes. For a while I thought that was where she was headed.
But the longer I worked on her, the quieter she wanted to be. Layer by layer she softened. The colours settled, the edges blurred, and what was once loud became something gentler. Something lovely.
I think the best paintings are a little like that. They tell you who they are when they're ready.

So this is love. That was the song running through my head as I finished this painting. The one from Cinderella. Soft and dreamy and completely full of feeling.
I think it found its way into every brushstroke. Warm and joyful and romantic in the best possible way. The kind of painting that makes a room feel like something wonderful is about to happen.
